BDR's EFFORTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER KATRINA!

Katrina Hit the Gulf Coast August 29th

Friday, September 2nd: Dee Ann Maxfield, the founder of Big Dog Rescue and Leann Lund, of Gulf Coast Shih Tzu rescue initiated a rather massive emergency call for food, water, and medical supplies. Within 24 hours through the help of our volunteers and many other people and companies, three large trailers were filled with thousands of pounds of food and supplies and taken to Gulfport, and Biloxi area and distributed to 4 different relief sites. Accolades to many who helped make it all happen in such a short period of time. We will make note of them below and be adding to the list as information is received from all the participants. All the animals from New Orleans will be taken to the Animal Sanctuary the convoy stopped at. The animals should be arriving there today (Tuesday, the 6th).

Dee Ann tells me they ran into people living in their cars because their homes were destroyed and the shelters wouldn't take anybody with animals. Not wanting to give up their pets, they chose to live in the cars with family and pets along the roadway rather then let their pets go. So they stopped the convoy and passed out food for the people as well as their pets on their way to the various drop off points. Some had to let their starving pets go with hope that they may be able find food in the wild on their own.

Friday Sept 9th: Our first trailer of the 2nd convoy packed with many thousands of pounds of food & supplies left for Mississippi.

Saturday Sept 10th: We had amassed another 11 to 12 thousand pounds of food and supplies which left around noon in a Ryder truck.

Sept 10th - afternoon: Through donations at our own drop-off boxes scattered throughout the city, and a huge donation of 8 pallets of dry food, we sent off another 16,000+ pounds of food and supplies.

Friday Sept 23rd: The scheduled convoy was canceled as a result of Hurricane Rita. However, a quick emergency run of medical and other supplies was run to a shelter in Mississippi, and animals were brought back on the return.

Friday Sept 30th: Two 36 foot trucks, each filled with 9 pallets of pet food, and two trailers taking the remaining stock of supplies left about 6:30pm for Mississippi and Louisiana. Brought back a horse, puppie, a cat and her 5 kittens!

Friday Oct 15th: A 36 foot truck departs for Gulfport, Waveland, and other points in the area with roughly 18,000 pounds of pet food, crates, other pet supplies, and medical supplies.

REQUIREMENTS!

 CASH & FOSTER HOMES!

Cash to pay for huge veterinarian bills that will be incurred for the displaced animals we will be receiving in the coming weeks.

We will need to find foster homes to place the animals until they can be adopted into permanent homes. Think of the thousands upon thousands of pets who lost their homes, are confused, lonely and desperate!
